Athome,wefaceaneconomiccrisisofhistoricproportions.MoreandmoreAmericansareworriedaboutlosingajobormakingtheirmortgagepayment.Workersarewonderingifnextmonth'spaycheckwillpaynextmonth'sbills.Retireesarewatchingtheirsavingsdisappear,andstudentsarestrugglingwiththecostoftuition.
It'sgoingtotakeboldandimmediateactiontoconfrontthiscrisis.That'swhyI'mcommittedtoforginganewbeginningfromthemomentItakeofficeasPresidentoftheUnitedStates.Earlierthisweek,Iannouncedmyeconomicteam.ThistalentedanddedicatedgroupisalreadyhardatworkcraftinganEconomicRecoveryPlanthatwillcreateorsave2.5millionnewjobs,whilemakingtheinvestmentsweneedtofuellong-termeconomicgrowthandstability.
ButthisThanksgiving,we'reremindedthattherenewalofoureconomywon'tcomefrompoliciesandplansalone.Itwilltakethehardwork,innovation,service,andstrengthoftheAmericanpeople.I'veseenthisstrengthfirsthandovermanymonths--inworkerswhoarereadytopowernewindustries,andfarmersandscientistswhocantapnewsourcesofenergy;inteacherswhostaylateafterschool,andparentswhoputinthatextrahourreadingtotheirkids;inyoungAmericansenlistinginatimeofwar,seniorswhovolunteertheirtime,andserviceprogramsthatbringhopetothehopeless.
It'satestamenttoournationalcharacterthatsomanyAmericanstooktimeoutthisThanksgivingtohelpfeedthehungryandcarefortheneedy.OnWednesday,IvisitedafoodbankatSaintColumbanusParishinChicago.Andthere,asinsomanycommunitiesacrossAmerica,folkspitchedintimeandresourcestogivealifttotheirneighborsinneed.ItisthisspiritthatbindsustogetherasoneAmericanfamily--thebeliefthatweriseandfallasonepeople;thatwewantthatAmericanDreamnotjustforourselves,butforeachother.
That'sthespiritwemustsummonaswemakeanewbeginningforournation.Timesaretough.Therearedifficultmonthsahead.ButwecanrenewournationthesamewaythatwehaveinthemanyyearssinceLincoln'sfirstThanksgiving:bycomingtogethertoovercomeadversity;byreachingfor--andworkingfor--newhorizonsofopportunityforallAmericans.
