SinceNewYear’sEvecomes,thesoundoffirecrackerswillnotdisappear.PlayingfirecrackersisthenecessarycustominNewYear’sEve.Thereisalegendaboutfirecrackers.Longlongago,amonstercalledNian(meansyear)hauntedaroundapeacefulvillage.Heattackedthepeopleandlivestockinthevillage.Thevillagershadnoideatodealwiththemonster.Theybecameveryfearfulandlivedindanger.Untiloneday,aclevermaninventedanarmcalledfirecracker.OnoneNewYear’sEve,heusedfirecrackerstodefeattheNianmonster.Inordertocommemoratethemanandhisglorydeeds,weplayfirecrackersandeatNiancakeeveryNewYear’seve.Niancake,alsocalledNewYearcake,standsforNianmonster.EatingNewYear’scakemeans“wewillliveabetterandbetterlifeyearly”.Thoughitisfunofplayingfirecrackers,wecannotplayfirecrackerswithoutcontrolinthatplayingfirecrackerscausesenvironmentalpollutionandsafeproblems.
At12:00ofthenight,thesoundofNewYear’stollingbellrings.That’stheexcitingmoment.Everypersonwaitsforthistime.Whenthebellrings,manyfirecrackerssoundatthesametime.Underthishotphenomenon,youwillfeeljubilantandhappy.EverybodycelebratesthisChineseNewYearjoyfully.Atthemoment,wemakeandeatJiaoziagain.Idon’tknowwhy,itisjustacustom.Todayitdevelopsanothercustom:peoplealwayspayaNewYearcallatthismoment.Notbyavisitbutbyaphoneormobilephone,wecallourrelativesandfriendstosayHappyNewYear,orsentourwishesbyshortmessage.Weattachimportanttoourrelativesandfriends,however,wedon’tforgetourancestors.OnNewYear’sEve,weoftenoffersacrificestoancestorsandcloserelatives.Weputfoodandwinebeforethepictureofancestorsandburnjosspapersforourcloserelatives.Itexpressesourrespectandlovetothem.
WestayupallthenightonNewYear’sEvesometimes.That’sacustomalso.Butthechildrenaredrovetosleepbecausetheywanttogainnewyearmoneygifttochildren.ThenewyearmoneyshouldbegiventochildrenonNewYear’sEveandpressunderthechildren’spillowforawholenight.
除夕夜的年夜饭也叫团圆饭，根据宗懔《荆楚岁时记》的记载，至少在南北朝时已有吃年夜饭的习俗。因为正值冬天，北方人常常在饭桌中间设置火锅，因此也称围炉。
北方人年夜饭的菜色中常包括水饺、鱼、年糕、长年菜等。因为水饺状似金元宝，有富贵之意;鱼这道菜不能吃完，因为在汉语中“鱼”和“余”同音，有“年年有余”的吉祥意思;年糕则有“年年高升”之意;吃长年菜则有长寿的意涵。华南则多有鸡、烧肉、发菜、蚝豉等，因为“发菜蚝豉”与“发财好市”谐音。江南的典型年夜饭必有鱼，丰盛汤锅。
按照老礼，除夕夜传统的座次是“尚左尊东”、“面朝大门为尊”。年宴的首席为辈分最高的长者，末席为最低者。如果是请客，首席为地位最尊的客人，主人则居末席。首席未落座，其余都不能落座，首席未动手，大家都不能动手。
不汲水
过年有“不汲水”的禁忌，家有水井的人家要在除日黄昏前“封井”，给水井加上木盖，供奉糕点以后焚香拜祭，三日后方可开盖复用。
贴春联
春联，也叫“门对”、“春贴”、“对联”、“对子”，属于楹联的一种，是一种独特的文学形式。这副世界上最早的春联，“三阳始布，四序初开”记载在莫高窟藏经洞出土的敦煌遗书上，撰联人为唐人刘丘子，作于开元十一年。百姓春节贴春联的民俗从明代才开始盛行，潮流发源地是南京。现在江南地区百姓讲究在大年三十上午贴春联。
除夕来历很久以前，有一个妖怪叫“夕”。这家伙专门害人，特别是看见哪家有漂亮的女孩，晚上就要去糟蹋她，尔后还要把女孩吃了才甘心。老百姓对它恨得要死，但又没有办法。有个叫七郎的猎人，力大无穷，箭射得特别好，喂的狗也非常厉害，任何猛兽都敢去斗。七郎见百姓被“夕”害苦了，就想除掉它。他带着狗到处找“夕”，找来找去始终没有找到。原来“夕”白天不出来，太阳落山后它才出来害人，半夜后又不见了，也没人知道它住在哪儿。
七郎找“夕”找了一年，这天已是腊月三十，他来到一个镇上，见人们都在欢欢喜喜准备过年，心想，这个镇大，人多，姑娘也多，说不定“夕”要来。他就找镇上的人们，说“夕”最怕响声，叫大家天黑了不要睡觉，多找些敲得响的东西放在家里，一有动静就使劲敲，好把“夕”吓出来除掉。
这天晚上“夕”果然来了，它刚闯进一户人家就被发现了。这家人马上敲起了盆盆罐罐，这家一敲，整个镇子也跟着敲起来了。“夕”吓得四处乱跑，结果被七郎看见了。七郎放出猎狗去咬他，“夕”就跟七郎和狗打了起来。人们一听外头杀起来了，都拿起东西敲得震天响。这时“夕”有点斗不过，想逃跑了事，哪知道后腿被猎狗咬着不放。七郎趁机开弓猛射，一箭就把“夕”射死了。
从那以后，人们就把腊月三十叫做“除夕”。这天晚上，家家户户都要守岁、放火炮，表示驱除不祥、迎接幸福祥瑞。
