OnSeptember18,1931,Japancreatedtheso-called"September18Incident"asapretexttooccupythreeprovincesinNortheastChina,thusignitingthefireofaworldwar.OnJuly7,1937,theJapaneseArmyconcoctedthe"Lugouqiao(MacroPoloBridge)Incident"ontheoutskirtsofBeijing,signalingthebeginningofanall-outinvasionofChina.FromAuguest13toNovember12ofthatyear,theJapanesetroopsattackedandtookoverShanghai.Soonafter,theJapanesetroopsmarchedtoNanjingfromthreedirectionsandbesiegedthecity.AtthattimeNanjingwasthecaptialofChina.
